The Riverside Centre is home to Community Action Isle of Wight and the funds we generate here as a business directly supports the projects they undertake, such as a volunteer car service, Ukrainian Support, Isle of Wight Volunteer Centre, Bay Youth Project and Community Law Service . You can read more about Community Action Isle of Wight here.
All our charitable work is community focused, and providing opportunities through volunteering is an integral part what we do. By volunteering at The Riverside Centre you directly support the work of our colleagues and the services we are able to provide as charity, and as a community venue.
Please see below for positions at The Riverside Centre. For more general volunteering opportunities on the island, please check our Volunteer Centre website.
Volunteer Receptionist
The role of front desk reception at The Riverside Centre is diverse and multifunctional; as the first point of contact you are ‘the face’ of The Riverside Centre, and creating a great first impression by polite and friendly interaction is a key aspect of the role and so we are looking for a confident individual with good customer service skills.
Customer service is an integral part of the role, directing attendees, delegates and visitors to the right part of the building and helping guests with directions. You should be knowledgeable about the facilities within the building and their location, the whereabouts and differences of the various toilet and bathroom facilities, available refreshments, the fire evacuation procedure, the location and identity of first aiders, and also be knowledgeable and proactive in helping visitors with the car parking arrangements.
The Riverside Centre is a diverse environment and hosts a variety of individuals, and so confidence adapting to different people and their individual needs is key; although the Riverside Centre is not a public building, it is a building that is open to the public; expect the unexpected!
As the first point of contact you are also the first in line keeping our building safe and secure for everyone who works here or is visiting. We do not use an accreditation or ‘sign-in, sign-out’ system, so vigilance and intuition are a necessary part of the role, although full training will be given.
You should be comfortable working alone and be confident making decisions. A telephone is provided to make calls to internal staff and our external tenants when their visitors arrive, but there is no expectation to answer the telephone when it rings if you would prefer not to. There is an opportunity to grow the role for individuals who wish to expand their skills.
Shifts are typically 4 hours either morning or afternoon. The following shifts are available:
Monday pm
Tuesday am
Friday am

Building Maintenance (odd-jobs)
The Riverside Centre is looking for a volunteer to help maintain the property; this position would suit a competent individual, ideally with previous experience in a similar role who is happy to work alone and without supervision.
The Riverside Centre is home to Community Action Isle of Wight; an island based charity providing services and support to communities and charities across the island, The Riverside Centre helps funds these projects through its venue hire and functions. The building is large and old and receives a high number of visitors through the doors every day, and as such is in need of some TLC. The building itself, on Newport Quay, was built as a gas works in Victorian times and much of the original building is still in use today. Extensions and modifications have been added over the years. There are several other organisations that call The Riverside Centre home, all of them community focused in their pursuits and most of them charities too.
This role requires someone with sound DIY knowledge and who is physically fit. There will be routine jobs both indoors and out, such as clearing the guttering, jet washing the courtyard and other areas, maintaining outdoor furniture, spray painting hazard areas, and painting external ironwork, for example. There will also be maintenance work indoors such as filling, sanding and painting walls and woodwork, putting up shelves and other fixtures and fittings. Sanding and varnishing woodwork, replacing carpet tiles, and general running repairs. Basic plumbing skills would also be a real advantage. (As a charity we support the idea of making use of what we have, reusing and recycling, and repairing things promptly is a priority.)
This position is all year round and requires a minimum of 3 hours a week on days and at times to suit you. You will report to the Operations Manager to agree which jobs have priority, and manage workload based on how busy the centre is and what the weather and daylight hours permit. You will have the assistance of staff and volunteers as and when required, for example with heavy lifting.
Just a few hours a week will make a huge difference to our building, the people that work within it, and the people that use our facility. Please drop us a line to take the first step in finding out more, or give us a call and come and take a tour, we’d love to see you.
All expenses are covered and tools are provided. Free onsite parking, Wi-Fi and unlimited tea and biscuits.

Volunteer Gardener
The Riverside Centre is looking for a volunteer to help maintain the grounds, beds and borders; this position would suit an individual with previous experience of garden care and who is happy to work alone and without supervision.
The Riverside Centre is home to Community Action Isle of Wight; an island based charity providing services and support to communities and charities across the island, The Riverside Centre helps funds these projects through its venue hire and functions.
The Riverside Centre is built on the site of an old Victorian gas works, and as a result when the building was decommissioned and modified all the planting spaces were built as raised beds for fear of ground contamination. In this role, you will have the flexibility to develop the planting in the borders around the building if you so wish, and have creative control to plan and grow the many and varied beds, (there is also the option to utilise our allotment area). Some beds simply require routine maintenance, others are a blank canvass; the Riverside Centre is also keen to develop wildlife friendly planting schemes; we also have a number of mature trees and shrubs.
This position is all year round, and requires a minimum of 4 hours a week on days and at times to suit you. You will report to the Operations Manager, and have the assistance of staff and volunteers as and when required, for example with heavy lifting.
All expenses are covered and tools are provided. Free onsite parking and wifi, and unlimited tea and biscuits.
If this role sounds like something you would enjoy and benefit from; please telephone Catherine on 539372 for an informal chat.
